Central Luzon’s total volume of production of other crops was estimated at 1,430.87 thousand metric tons in 2018. It slightly dropped by 5.51 percent in 2018 as compared to that in 2017 (See Figure 1). The province of Tarlac remained to be the top contributor to the total production of other crops in the region accounting for 49.82 percent share followed by Nueva Ecija and Pampanga with 15.56 percent and 13.03 percent shares, respectively. Meanwhile, Bataan had the lowest volume of other crops production with 1.76 percent share in 2018 (See Table 1).
Sugarcane remained to be the top produced commodity of other crops in the region with 52.69 percent share to the total production of other crops in 2018. It was followed by Coconut (with husk) and Onion (mature bulb) with about 7.39 percent and 7.27 percent shares, respectively (See Figure 2).
Meanwhile, 20.53 percent of the total production of other crops was attributed from the sum of other commodities that were not listed in detail in the chart such as Stringbeans, Tomato, Eggplant, etc.
Five out of the top 10 produced other crops (Coconut (with husk), Sweet Potato, Banana, Tomato, and Eggplant) in the region registered increments in production while the other five commodities (Sugarcane, Onion (mature bulb), Mango, Stringbeans, and Mango Carabao) registered decrements in 2018. Most of the commodities were able to maintain their rankings aside from Onion (mature bulb) which was outplaced by Coconut (with husk) due to its notable decrease of 9,298.48 metric tons (See Table 2).
Technical Notes
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) generates production-related statistics on crops other than palay and corn through the Crops Production Survey (CrPS).
The CrPS is a quarterly survey which aims to generate basic production statistics for crops other than palay and corn at the national and sub-national levels. The reference and enumeration periods by survey round are as follow:
Definition of Terms
Crop Production - The quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those measured but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvesters’ share, and reserved. Excluded are those produced but not harvested for whatever reason/s.
