Carabao Production in Central Luzon Increased by 2.2 Percent in First Quarter of 2025

•    The total volume of carabao production in Central Luzon recorded 1,440.89 metric tons, liveweight.  It grew by 31.70 metric tons or 2.2 percent compared to the 1,409.19 metric tons produce in the first quarter of 2024. (Table 1)

•    At the national level, Eastern Visayas registered the highest production of carabao with 2,933.70 metric tons, liveweight, it was followed by Negros Island Region with the second highest output at 2,671.80 metric tons while, Northern Mindanao ranked third with 2,385.85 metric tons.  The top three regions contributed 10.3 percent, 9.4 percent, and 8.4 percent to the total carabao production, respectively.

•    Central Luzon ranked eleventh in terms of volume of carabao production and shared 5.1 percent to the national output. (Figure 1)

Total Volume of Cattle Production Decreased by 6.2 Percent

•    The total volume of cattle production in Central Luzon was at 2,842.69 metric tons, liveweight from January to March 2025.  It dropped by 187.60 metric tons, or an equivalent of 6.2 percent decrease compared to the cattle production of 3,030.29 metric tons in the same quarter of 2024.  (Table 1)

•    Across the country, Northern Mindanao was the top-producing region in terms of cattle production with 11,646.12 metric tons, contributing 21.3 percent to the national produce. Ilocos Region recorded the second highest with 5,683.78 metric tons or 10.4 percent share followed by CALABARZON which produced 4,614.68 metric tons from January to March 2025 and contributed 8.4 percent to the country’s total cattle production during the first quarter of 2025.

•    Meanwhile, Central Luzon ranked tenth with a share of 5.2 percent to the country’s cattle production. (Figure 2)

Central Luzon Ranked Third Among Hog-Producing Regions in the Country in the First Quarter of 2025

•    During the first quarter of 2025, hog production in Central Luzon grew by 1,713.99 metric tons or an increase of 3.5 percent which resulted in a total regional hog production of 50,655.84 metric tons. During the same quarter of 2024, Central Luzon’s total volume of hog production was registered at 48,941.85 metric tons, liveweight. (Table 1)

•    At the national level, Northern Mindanao registered the highest production of hog with 57,989.25 metric tons, liveweight, it was followed by CALABARZON with the second highest output at 57,361.17 metric tons.  The top two regions contributed 14.4 percent, and 14.2 percent to the total hog production, respectively.

•    Meanwhile, Central Luzon ranked third with a share of 12.5 percent to the country’s hog production. (Figure 3)
 

Goat Production in Central Luzon Increased by 1.2 Percent in First Quarter of 2025

•    During the first quarter of 2025, the total volume of goat production in Central Luzon  registered at 1,187.70 metric tons while the recorded produce of goat in the same period in 2024 was 1,173.05 metric tons liveweight. The goat production increased by 14.65 metric tons, translating to 1.2 percent increase in the total volume of goat production. (Table 1)

•    Across the country, Ilocos Region was the highest goat-producing region with 1,615.18 metric tons contributing 11.1 percent share to the national goat production.  Northern Mindanao marked the second highest with 1,554.39 metric tons of goat production, accounting for 10.7 percent share followed by Davao Region which produced 1,514.75 metric tons from January to March 2025 and contributed 10.5 percent to the country’s total goat production during the first quarter of 2025 (Table 2)  

•    Central Luzon was the sixth highest goat producing-region in the country with 8.2 percent share in January to March 2025. (Figure 4)

VOLUME OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION

This Special Release presents the data on volume of livestock production for January to March 2025 from the Livestock and Poultry Survey: Household (LPS:H) and Livestock and Poultry Survey: Establishment (LPS:E) in Central Luzon.  Data are presented at the regional level by commodity in Table 1.  Also, data are presented by region and by commodity in Table 2.  

The LPS:H and LPS:E are two (2) major surveys conducted by PSA which aim to generate estimates on inventory, number of animals disposed, average farmgate price, egg production of poultry animals, milk production of dairy animals and other related data at the household level (LPS:H) and to estimates on supply, disposition and other related data of livestock and poultry commodities from establishments (LPS:E). 

Definition of Terms
Volume of Production (operational definition) - the number of tended/raised animals disposed for slaughter including animals shipped-out for slaughter (in “head/bird” and in “liveweight equivalent”).
Livestock - farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work, or leisure. For purposes of census and surveys, livestock covers only those that are tended and raised by an operator (household) and establishment.
Backyard farm/raiser - refers to household raising at least one head of animal or bird and does not qualify as an establishment.
Animal Population (also Animal Inventory) - the actual number of animals (in head/bird) present in the household (LPS:H) or establishment (LPS:E) as of a specific reference date regardless of ownership. 
Household – A person or group of persons who sleep under the same dwelling unit and usually have a common arrangement in the preparation and consumption of food.
Establishment - an economic unit which engages under a single ownership or control, i.e., under a single legal entity; in one or predominantly one kind of economic activity at a single fixed physical location. Thus, stores, shops, factories, mining companies, electric plants, transport companies, radio stations, hotels, restaurants, banks, insurance companies, real estate development companies and the like are considered establishments. For this survey, L&P establishments are establishments engaged in the raising (farming) and breeding of livestock and poultry animals in an establishment. Also, traders such as assemblers, distributors, etc. will be excluded in the survey.
Liveweight – the body weight of live animals disposed for slaughter.
