Central Luzon’s Total Corn Production Rose by 30.6 Percent
The total corn production of Central Luzon for the second quarter of 2021 rose to 139,416 metric tons, recording 30.6 percent increase from its production in same quarter of 2020. Cagayan Valley topped the corn production as it posted a 30.4 percent share of the total volume produced across the 17 regions in the country. It was followed by Ilocos Region and BARMM with a share of 12.1 percent and 12.0 percent, respectively. (Figure 1 and Table 1)
The region registered an increase of 32,671 metric tons on its total corn production in the second quarter of 2021 compared to that of the same quarter in 2020. Nueva Ecija and Pampanga posted more than doubled their production a year ago with their 113.8 percent and 129.9 percent increases, respectively. On the other hand, Tarlac had the highest decrease in terms of volume of corn production (2,643 metric tons). (Table 2)
The region’s corn production in the second quarter of 2021 was 90.5 percent yellow corn and 9.5 percent white corn. (Figure 2)
Yellow corn recorded double digit increase (34.8 percent) in the second quarter of 2021 posting 32,567 metric tons increment while white corn recorded only 0.8 percent increase (105 metric tons). (Figure 3)
Tarlac contributed nearly half (46.9%) of the corn production in the region for the second quarter of 2021. Moreover, Pampanga and Nueva Ecija accounted for 26.3 percent and 20.4 percent, respectively, of the total corn production in the region. The combined share of Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, and Zambales comprised the remaining 6.4 percent. (Figure 4)
Estimates of volume of corn production are generated from the Quarterly Corn Production Survey (CPS) of which there are four survey rounds in a year, that is, January, April, July and October.
The objective of the survey is to generate estimates on corn production. The purpose of this survey is to provide data inputs for policy and programs on corn. The reference and enumeration periods by survey round are as follows:
Definition of terms
Production – refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvester’s share, reserved, etc. Production from seed growers is excluded from the survey.
White corn – type of corn used primarily for human consumption.
Yellow corn – used generally as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white.
